{"id":5055,"date":"2021-07-12T10:50:07","date_gmt":"2021-07-12T10:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/?p=5055"},"modified":"2021-07-12T10:51:11","modified_gmt":"2021-07-12T10:51:11","slug":"the-contamination-eilats-fish-farms-left-behind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/en\/ocean_beach\/the-contamination-eilats-fish-farms-left-behind\/","title":{"rendered":"The Contamination Eilat\u2019s Fish Farms Left Behind"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Contamination Eilat&#039;s Fish Farms Left Behind\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/brLFLcO0VJ4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Known for its rich ecosystem and resilient network of coral reefs, preserving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parks.org.il\/en\/reserve-park\/eilat-coral-beach-nature-reserve-2\/\">Gulf of Eilat<\/a> has been a central focus for many scientists, government employees, and public activists because like many of the world\u2019s valued ecological sites, it faces a variety of human induced threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent weeks for example, multiple environmental organizations led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/natureisrael.org\/\">Society for the Protection of Nature<\/a> have been pressuring the Israeli government to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calcalist.co.il\/local_news\/article\/BkUsjn4sd\">immediately suspend an oil transportation agreement <\/a>between the Israeli controlled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eapc.com\/\">Europe-Asia Pipeline Co.<\/a> and UAE-based Med-Red Land Bridge Ltd. In its current form, the deal involves transporting crude oil via oil tankers from the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Eilat where it will be piped to Ashkelon for easier and less costly access to European markets across the Mediterranean Sea.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only would such a move put the Gulf of Eilat\u2019s unique <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/%d7%90%d7%99%d7%9c%d7%aa-%d7%94%d7%9e%d7%a4%d7%9c%d7%98-%d7%94%d7%90%d7%97%d7%a8%d7%95%d7%9f-%d7%9e%d7%a9%d7%99%d7%a0%d7%95%d7%99-%d7%94%d7%90%d7%a7%d7%9c%d7%99%d7%9d\/\">coral reef system<\/a> and Israel\u2019s Mediterranean coastal ecosystems at risk of irreversible damage from an oil leak or spill, but it also has the potential to disable desalination facilities, something that the country cannot afford to lose because of its <a href=\"http:\/\/support.jnf.org\/site\/PageServer?pagename=Water_facts#:~:text=Currently%2C%20Israel's%20water%20resources%20yield,water%20resources%20by%2025%20percent.\">chronic water scarcity<\/a>. As a result, residents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globes.co.il\/news\/article.aspx?did=1001357007\">scientists<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/saveredmed.org\/%D7%97%D7%93%D7%A9%D7%95%D7%AA\/\"> environmental organizations<\/a> have all spoken out against it warning of these dangers of which no one wants to live through should they occur.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this is not the first time the area has been at risk of pollution. In the first decade of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century, the country\u2019s once active mariculture fish cages put Eilat\u2019s waters in turmoil due the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tau.ac.il\/lifesci\/departments\/zoology\/members\/loya\/documents\/157.pdf\">accumulation of organic matter<\/a> on the seafloor from waste food and fish feces deposited in and around the vicinity of them. Known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/scitable\/knowledge\/library\/eutrophication-causes-consequences-and-controls-in-aquatic-102364466\/\">eutrophication<\/a>, this process effectively altered water quality and blocked sunlight from reaching benthic photosynthetic organisms like &nbsp;the Zooxanthellae algae within the corals tissue, causing them to gradually deteriorate. And because the Gulf\u2019s current flow and water turnover rate is weaker compared to ocean currents, the local pollution was able to have a longer lasting and stronger impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The consensus in today&#8217;s research is that it is better for marine pollution to disperse and dilute in the open sea than for acute local pollution to develop,&#8221; explains Dr. Shai Oron, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Geophysical Sciences at the University of Haifa and the Eilat Inter-University Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After more than a decades-long struggle, environmental organizations and expert scientists finally prevailed in removing the fish farms in 2008. Photo by Dr. Shai Oron.<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The new study was conducted by researchers from the University of Haifa, the IOLR (Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research) Institute in Haifa, and the University of Western Australia with the assistance of the <a href=\"https:\/\/iui-eilat.huji.ac.il\/Research\/NMPMeteoData.aspx\">Israel National Monitoring Program at the Gulf of Eilat<\/a>. In the first year, damage to the entire biodiversity beneath the cages could be identified,&#8221; explains Dr. Oron. In fact, according to the study, benthic ecosystems were so badly damaged by organic enrichment from the fish cages that no living foraminifera were seen within an 80-meter radius of the cages for many months after their removal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Foraminifera skeletons. Photo by Dr. Shai Oron<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Oron, the original purpose of the study was not to detect contaminants at all. &#8220;We tried to examine foraminifera skeletons collected at the site in different years to detect rainwater flowing from the shore to the sea, but then we suddenly saw the pollutants in quantities not typical of the area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings of the study indicate that the concentrations of various harmful substances were higher in the areas where the fish cages were located compared to the control site. While zinc (Zn) returned to normal levels just three years following their removal, copper (Cu) levels were found to be four times higher at the cage site compared to the control site even in 2018\u2013\u2013a whole decade following the removal of the fish cages. Although phosphorus (P) levels at the cage site were shown to have dropped significantly after 2011, the researchers found that levels have actually increased over the years since then due gradual releases from the seafloor sediment that accumulated while the fish cages were still active.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But where did these substances even originate in the first place? According to Dr. Oron and her research team, there are two likely sources; the first being manufactured fish feeds, which commonly contain a variety of elements including P, Zn, and Cu. The second source are the antifouling paints and dyes that were used in the infrastructure of fish cages and nets themselves as a way to prevent algae from clinging to the submerged surfaces. Photo by Dr. Shai Oron.<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Various other studies have found direct links between high concentrations of the substances the new Israeli study identified and harm to living organisms in the marine environment. Metals such as Cu and Zn are naturally present in the marine environment in minimal quantities, and they play an important role in <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007%2F978-3-030-73613-2_1\">enabling biological systems to function properly<\/a>. However, when their concentrations grow several times higher than natural values and are exposed to plants and wildlife, it can <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.epa.gov\/raf\/web\/pdf\/ecoeffectsfinal81904.pdf\">interfere with their development, physiology, and potentially result in increased mortality<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Copper, for example, is one of the most toxic elements to marine organisms, and higher levels can cause irreversible damage to various species such as fish and invertebrates, which <a href=\"https:\/\/akmininginfo.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/solomon_impactscopperaquaticecosystemshumanhealth.pdf\">are 10 to 100 times more sensitive than mammals<\/a>. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00338-019-01774-z\">another recent study<\/a> conducted in the Gulf of Eilat found that excess copper in seawater can impair corals\u2019 resistance to heat stress events, which inevitably leads to fatal bleaching. This is especially concerning because coral networks in the Gulf of Eilat are known to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/en\/weather-climate\/the-perils-of-cold-induced-coral-bleaching\/\">most resilient reef system in the face of climate change<\/a> compared to other reef systems like the Great Barrier Reef.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In high concentrations, phosphorus is no different as it is the main driver of eutrophication.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Phosphorus is a nutrient that is found in small amounts in a marine environment where coral reefs thrive, such as the one in the Gulf of Eilat,&#8221; says Dr. Oron. &#8220;High levels of phosphorus upset the ecological balance in these systems and allow algae that feed on it to bloom, leading to the blockage of sunlight and damaging coral reefs and other living things in the environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Consider the Consequences&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings provided by the Foraminifera skeletons were not the only evidence for contaminants in the water found in the study. According to measurements of pollutants in the sediment itself from samples collected two years and five years after the cages were removed, copper concentrations within forty meters of the former cage site were at levels considered harmful according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/node\/150329\/view\">US Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)<\/a> criteria but acceptable to Israel\u2019s Ministry of Environmental Protection. Likewise, the concentration of phosphorus in the prior cage locations were nearly eight times higher than the standard levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The data can give us an idea of \u200b\u200bwhat would have happened if the cages had not been taken out.
