However, it may soon no longer exist. The fact of the matter is that the Dead Sea is not naturally receiving enough water to sustain itself, causing it to recede at a surprising rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.globes.co.il\/en\/article-dead-sea-level-falling-12-meters-per-year-1001223618\">1.2 meters<\/a> (nearly four feet) every year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this goes beyond lacking precipitation and intense evaporative processes. Until the 1950s, the Dead Sea would regularly be recharged from fresh flowing streams and rivers from the surrounding mountainous landscape. At the time, the incoming flow of freshwater and the rate of evaporation were more or less balanced, keeping the water level mostly unchanged. But this all went sideways once Israel constructed a massive pumping station on the banks of the Kinneret freshwater lake in the 1960s, diverting water from the upper Jordan River, the Dead Sea\u2019s prime freshwater source, into a pipeline system to supply water throughout the rest of the country. For perspective, the sea needs an infusion of around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/the-dying-of-the-dead-sea-70079351\/\">600 million cubic meters of water<\/a> every year just to maintain its current size, and now, it barely receives 10% of that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1960 to 2018, the Dead Sea level dropped a total of <a href=\"https:\/\/hess.copernicus.org\/articles\/23\/2111\/2019\/hess-23-2111-2019.pdf\">35 meters<\/a>. At this rate, it is predicted to fall an additional estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/st\/c\/prod\/global\/deadsea\/eng\/5\/\">25 meters<\/a> by 2036, and most experts predict the sea won\u2019t disappear completely but instead <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/the-dying-of-the-dead-sea-70079351\/\">reach an equilibrium<\/a> as the rate of evaporation slows in the coming decades, but not before losing another third of its present volume.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Sinking Into the Ground<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/HJrRdGu000_0_0_980_551_0_large.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5197\" width=\"831\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/HJrRdGu000_0_0_980_551_0_large.jpeg 490w, https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/HJrRdGu000_0_0_980_551_0_large-300x169.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 831px) 100vw, 831px\" \/><figcaption><em><sup>Abandoned tourist campsite in Ein Gedi along the shore of the Dead Sea. Photo courtesy of Dr. Meir Abelson.<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, why is the Dead Sea&#8217;s diminishing water level so concerning? The creation of sinkholes. As the sea evaporates and recedes, the freshwater aquifers along its perimeter also moves towards the retreating sea. As this freshwater diffuses into the salt deposits beneath the surface of the shoreline, the water slowly dissolves the deposits until the earth above is no longer structurally sound and collapses inward, usually without a clear warning. Among other things, this ongoing process has <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2013\/09\/the-dead-sea-is-dying-how-sinkholes-habitat-destruction-and-low-water-levels-are-destroying-the-middle-easts-most-famous-body-of-water.html\">jeopardized human and infrastructure safety<\/a>, crumbling the area&#8217;s tourism and local economy, literally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe threat of the sinkholes is only growing and limiting human activity in the area. Further development of infrastructures is very complicated, and some areas can be very dangerous for travelling,\u201d says Dr. Meir Abelson, researcher for the Geological Survey of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, sinkholes vary in size ranging from diameters as small as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adssc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/journal7-2-1.pdf\">one meter to as large as 600 meters<\/a>, and the larger the hole, the more capable it is of endangering people and swallowing trees, cars, and even buildings. From the 1980s, sinkholes first began appearing along the Dead Sea\u2019s shores and since then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-06-10\/the-disappearing-dead-sea-sinkhole-science-en-gedi\/100123858\">over 6,000<\/a> others have formed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adssc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/journal7-2-1.pdf\">75% of them forming since 1997<\/a>. Unfortunately, this has transformed the surrounding area into an ever increasingly unpredictable environment, so much so that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/st\/c\/prod\/global\/deadsea\/eng\/5\/\">scientists speculate<\/a> the Dead Sea will be fully barricaded on its northern end, fully eliminating it as an accessible Israeli tourist attraction by 2040.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous events have already occurred throughout the years foreshadowing this disappointing outcome. Because of the frequency of sinkhole formations and lack of guaranteed safety, some <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/travel\/news\/dead-sea-sinkholes\">tourist resorts and beaches<\/a> that once attracted thousands of yearly travelers from around the world, are now utterly abandoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:64% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screenshot-at-Jul-26-10-58-37-1-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screenshot-at-Jul-26-10-58-37-1-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screenshot-at-Jul-26-10-58-37-1-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screenshot-at-Jul-26-10-58-37-1-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screenshot-at-Jul-26-10-58-37-1-1536x1024.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Screenshot-at-Jul-26-10-58-37-1.png 1734w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">For instance, Mineral Beach, a former resort in the Israeli settlement of Mitzpe Shalem, used to host around 250,000 visitors every year, but had no choice but to close in 2015 when a sinkhole suddenly materialized and caved in the parking lot and a number of rooms. &#8220;We are a small kibbutz and this resort was our supporting pillar, economically but also socially,&#8221; manager Avi Cohen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/sinkholes-threaten-israels-dead-sea-tourist-trade-n392461\">told NBC News<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Aftermath of sinkhole event at Mineral Beach Resort. Photo courtesy of Dr. Meir Abelson.  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to this incident, The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabpotash.com\/Default\/En\">Arab Potash Company<\/a>, located in Jordan, lost a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intechopen.com\/books\/land-applications-of-radar-remote-sensing\/dikes-stability-monitoring-versus-sinkholes-and-subsidence-dead-sea-region-jordan\">$38 million production unit<\/a> to a sinkhole in 2000, and the company is expected to undergo an additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adssc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/journal7-2-1.pdf\">$70-90 million<\/a> loss in future sinkhole damages due to their proximate location to the Dead Sea. Honestly, the short answer\u2013\u2013not much. After more than a decade of research and feasibility studies, Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority did officially agree to move ahead with the Red Sea-Dead Sea Water Conveyance Project in 2013. But much like the Dead Sea, the plans are currently dead in the water.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalnature.org\/bausteine.net\/f\/8005\/RedSea-DeadSeaCanalandFeasibilityStudyoftheWorldBank.pdf?fd=2\">The purpose of the pipeline<\/a> was twofold: to pump 200 million cubic meters of Red Sea seawater to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomena.org\/red-dead-sea-project\/\">yield 80-100 million cubic meters<\/a> of freshwater from a new desalination plant in Aqaba, Jordan to be shared with southern Israel, and to pump the remaining brine\u2013\u2013the highly concentrated byproduct\u2013\u2013to an elevation of 220 meters, taking advantage of the uphill topography, before being redirected&nbsp; 650 meters downwards to operate a hydroelectric power plant on its way to &nbsp;help reduce some of the Dead Sea\u2019s water level decline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reasons for the indefinite hold range from the 11 billion dollar price tag, to the recent stretch of Israel\u2019s inactive government, to Israel\u2019s presently tense geopolitical relationship with Jordan. Although supporters of the project see this as the Dead Sea\u2019s only hope of salvation and addressing the rate of sinkhole formation, critics remain skeptical of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalnature.org\/bausteine.net\/f\/8005\/RedSea-DeadSeaCanalandFeasibilityStudyoftheWorldBank.pdf?fd=2\">potential tradeoffs<\/a>, citing environmental concerns for the Red Sea\u2019s network of climate-resilient coral reefs and the landscape of the Arava Valley as well as the likely technical, economic, and civil repercussions. And due to this financial and diplomatic gridlock, the Dead Sea continues to recede and wither away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI do not know how we can stop it,\u201d says geologist Dr. Meir Abelson of Israel\u2019s Geological Survey. \u201cI am not convinced the Red Sea-Dead Sea canal would alleviate sinkhole development. In general, I believe that any human intervention in nature can be harmful because we can never anticipate all plausible consequences.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the absence of a satisfactory solution for the Dead Sea\u2019s restoration, the next plan of action is to track and predict where the dangerous sinkholes would most likely appear, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/346855922_Hydrological_and_Geological_Controls_on_the_Evolution_of_the_Dead_Sea_Sinkholes\">Dr. Abelson\u2019s research<\/a> does just that. Using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/natural-hazards\/volcano-hazards\/insar-satellite-based-technique-captures-overall-deformation-picture\">InSAR<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/library.seg.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1190\/sbgf2017-125\">nanoseisimc monitoring<\/a> to detect concealed areas of subsurface cavities, he and his colleagues are able to map risk zones and predict where sinkholes will form before they collapse. Even though monitoring does not prevent the sinkholes from occurring altogether, Abelson\u2019s research certainly works to inform safety measures to take place before it&#8217;s too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although smaller sized sinkholes can be filled in with concrete and clayey sand, this can only happen once they have stopped growing. Because the sinkholes around the Dead Sea are continuously expanding, planners have opted for temporary damage control. Many have also considered making the sinkholes into a tourism attraction, placing a positive spin on an otherwise alarming situation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although exacerbated by rising global temperatures more consistently exceeding 40\u00b0C (&gt;104), the Dead Sea\u2019s shrinkage is a product of human activity. It\u2019s mainly due to the Israeli and Jordanian Dead Sea factories that extract chemicals such as potassium and other fertilizers by evaporating its seawater and pumping natural freshwater feed sources. Dead Sea industrial activity continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magazine.isees.org.il\/?p=16243\">evaporate 280 million cubic meters<\/a> of its water each year, and no progress has been made replenishing the Dead Sea deficit.
