Agriculture is one such aspect of society feeling the burn, and it\u2019s only getting worse as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/global-issues\/population\">world population continues to grow<\/a> alongside consumer demand. Not only is agricultural output around the world suffering, especially in major breadbasket nations, but now it is struggling to maintain production capacities capable of satisfying larger international consumer bases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/mckinsey\/business%20functions\/sustainability\/our%20insights\/will%20the%20worlds%20breadbaskets%20become%20less%20reliable\/mgi-will-the-worlds-breadbaskets-become-less-reliable.pdf\">60%<\/a> of the world\u2019s food production originates from just five countries: the United States, China, Brazil, India, and Argentina. The presence of climate change, however, has effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/joc.3875\">increased the frequency of drought periods<\/a> in some of these regions, harming crop harvest in the process. Studies even show that <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs10584-005-9009-y\">39%<\/a> of American crop failures are linked to the impaired state of soils and climate. Although changes in temperature affect each crop differently, rice, corn, and soy\u2013three of the four most globally consumed grains\u2013are known to experience the most severe impacts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/mckinsey\/business%20functions\/sustainability\/our%20insights\/will%20the%20worlds%20breadbaskets%20become%20less%20reliable\/mgi-will-the-worlds-breadbaskets-become-less-reliable.pdf\">2020 case study<\/a> by the McKinsey Global Institute, the likelihood of widespread breadbasket shortages will significantly increase over the next three decades. Based on climate models, the researchers estimate an 18% chance of multiple breadbasket failure by 2030 and 34% by 2050. But due to competitive disadvantages, many smaller and developing countries tend to import grain from major breadbasket nations because it is cheaper than producing domestically. However, in light of the growing probability of widespread crop failures and shortages, this could prove quite detrimental for Israel because the country imports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/.premium.MAGAZINE-israel-is-dangerously-unprepared-for-food-shortages-revealed-global-warming-1.7455474\">90%<\/a> of its grain and legumes and only has five weeks worth of emergency stocks to fall back on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if Israel\u2019s reliance on breadbasket nations is so risky, what about its own local agriculture? Despite the country\u2019s well-refined water irrigation capabilities, unfortunately its climatic conditions are still very unforgiving, especially when it comes to long drought periods. Israel\u2019s annual rainfall has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/env\/resources\/Israel.pdf\">decreased by 9% since 1993<\/a>, and it has already experienced a notoriously long drought from 2003 to 2010. The near future does not look particularly promising either as Israel\u2019s average annual temperatures are projected to rise between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/env\/resources\/Israel.pdf\">0.3\u00b0C and 0.5\u00b0C<\/a> every ten years alongside a 20% decrease in precipitation by 2050.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently exceeding 9.2 million, Israel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs.gov.il\/en\/mediarelease\/pages\/2020\/israel-in-figures-rosh-hashana-selected-annual-data-2020.aspx\">Central Bureau of Statistics<\/a> expects the country\u2019s population to reach 10 million by the end of 2024 and projects there will be 15 million by the end of 2048. With these growing figures, it is becoming more and more uncertain whether conventional agriculture is going to cut it, which has prompted the need to integrate sustainable solutions into food production. Currently, there are over <a href=\"https:\/\/investinisrael.gov.il\/HowWeHelp\/downloads\/Invest_in_Israel_-_The_Israeli_Ag-Tech_Industry_Brochure_-_22012020.pdf\">440 active companies<\/a> operating in Israel\u2019s Ag-Tech industry, and 172 of them were founded within the last seven years, investing the majority of efforts towards improving plant and livestock sciences and innovating sensors and digital agriculture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>An Artificially Intelligent Solution&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/e10e1a73-0fc9-4233-bb98-9601c940e6b1-1024x685.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5237\"\/><figcaption><em><sup>Fermata.Tech&#8217;s proprietary monitoring camera. Photo courtesy of Valeria Kogan. <\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering that an average of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidmoore.org.uk\/21st_century_guidebook_to_fungi_platinum\/ch14_01.htm\">one in every eight crops<\/a> around the world fail to yield due to fungal disease, a company called <a href=\"https:\/\/fermata.tech\/\">Fermata.Tech<\/a> has developed a successful solution for greenhouses involving artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate plant growth by identifying diseases and detecting the presence of pest activity much earlier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo achieve this goal, we install special cameras in greenhouses that observe and take pictures of every single plant,\u201d says Fermata.Tech CEO, Valeria Kogan. \u201cThen the AI analyses the images and identifies what\u2019s really going on like whether the plants are healthy or unhealthy, which diseases or pests might be present, or the rate at which the plants are growing\u2013whatever the farmer needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:52% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-21-18.22.52-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-21-18.22.52-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-21-18.22.52-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-21-18.22.52-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.zavit.org.il\/intl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2021-07-21-18.22.52.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p style=\"font-size:27px\">So far, their methods have enabled greenhouses to cut disease-related harvest loss by 30-40% and reduce active human monitoring by 50%, according to the company\u2019s trials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Photo courtesy of Valeria Kogan. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorkers tend to only notice when a plant is infected once the disease has already spread, which is where a lot of production is lost, making it one of the main sources of food waste on the planet,\u201d says Kogan. \u201cUp to 40% of greenhouse and open field crops are lost due to disease, and this generates an annual financial loss of 7 billion dollars.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the workers who visually monitor plants growing inside greenhouses are not trained agronomists, they need to contact an agronomist to determine how best to proceed with the affected plants if they see something questionable among them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn average, agronomists come and inspect plants once a week, but this takes up a lot of time, especially when these greenhouses host upwards of 10,000 plants,\u201d says Kogan. \u201cObviously, human vision is limited. It\u2019s like a jungle! So, it\u2019s just not realistic to monitor every leaf of every plant every day like that. Artificial intelligence replaces this process and makes it automatic.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To develop their AI system, Fermata paired with a team of agronomists to create an extensive database of high-quality plant images each accompanied by images of what they look like when afflicted by certain diseases or pests. When the image sensor technology detects a crop, it is automatically matched against this programmed data and analyzed for its health status.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur core expertise is in software development, and we developed this AI solution to make it possible to analyze images and then define what\u2019s going on with the plants in these images,\u201d says Kogan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This information is then transferred to Fermata where the company then decides how to proceed. Because their AI can detect a very wide range of issues from infectious diseases to even noticing if a plant is suffering from dryness, Fermata must be very client oriented because some clients are not fully equipped to deal with every single issue that may arise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery session with a particular client starts with a conversation about what is important for them because our alerts very much depend on what type of crop, region, or resources the farmer has,\u201d Kogan explains. While some farmers want to be aware of any and every issue, others prefer not to be alerted about a select few issues because of the lack of resources they may have to tend to it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very important for us not to bombard clients like this telling them \u2018you have x, y, z issues\u2019 if they don\u2019t have the capabilities to fix it. So, this is why we try to be very flexible to fit their needs. Plus, we have very great quality data that makes the product really competitive. We\u2019re not only focused on tomatoes or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertilizerdaily.com\/20200720-medical-plants-utilize-the-power-of-ai\/\">cannabis<\/a>, or flowers; our AI can handle all of them and much more, which makes it really scalable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Photo courtesy of Valeria Kogan. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second advantage relates to its easy installation process. Because Fermata does not have an installation staff, they send their products to the clients themselves with simple-to-follow installation instructions. And because Fermata has experience working with conventional greenhouses and other types of indoor farms, including vertical farms, their instructions can be molded according to the client\u2019s particular growing space.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven if we have a client tomorrow in South Africa or Brazil, it\u2019s not an issue for us. We just send our equipment with instructions, and within a couple hours, the system can be up and running,\u201d says Kogan.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe indoor trend is really growing,\u201d Kogan states. \u201cIn many countries, especially in Asia, there is a lack of space for traditional agriculture, so it&#8217;s very important to use any available industrial space for efficient food production.
